Pompeii

Pompeii was frozen in place in 79AD when Vesuvius erupted, covering the city in 40 feet of lava and mud. The site was abandoned. Unlike other places where only the most notable sites have been preserved, Pompeii gives an overall view of daily life. In fact, there are several places where archaeologists found holes while excavating. They poured plaster into the holes before excavating further, and this is what they discovered. Bodies had decayed to bones, but the space they occupied remained.
